Privacy Policy

This policy describes what data the app "Would You Rather?" (wuerdestdu.web.app, also available as an app on Google Play) processes and why. Last updated: October 2026.

What data

You don't need an account (signing in with Google to back up your progress is optional, see below). When you first play, you automatically get a random, anonymous ID. With it, we store:

We also count how often things happen in the game, for example how many questions are answered per day and per category, how many rooms are created or items bought in the shop, how many players are active on a day and how many come back after a few days. For this, only your device remembers the day you started. These are pure totals, without your ID and with no link to you. They help us improve the game.

Your device (the app or browser storage) also holds your name, your sound setting, your language and your game progress (achievements, level, missions, daily bonus, coins, unlocked packs and cat outfits) and your favorites (saved and self-written questions). If you play with others on one phone, we remember the other players' names for next time; they never leave your device, not even when you back up with Google. The rest of this data does not leave your device unless you back up your progress with Google or use a self-written question in a room or in "Ask Friends" (then the sections below apply).

Backing up your progress with Google (optional)

In the settings you can sign in with your Google account. We then store a copy of your game progress (see above) in the database so you can restore it on a new device. For this, Google gives us the email address, name and profile picture of your Google account. Of these, we only use the ID for signing in and show the email address in the settings. Only someone signed in with that Google account can read the backup.

Under Settings → Back up progress → "Delete backup" you can delete the backup and the link to your Google account yourself at any time. You can also request deletion by email (address above).

What we don't do

No ads, no tracking, no analytics tools, and no sharing or selling of your data.

Service providers

The app runs on Google Firebase (Google Ireland Ltd. and Google LLC, USA): hosting, anonymous ID and database. In doing so, Google processes technically necessary data such as your IP address. Data may also be processed in the USA. Google relies on the EU-US and Swiss-US Data Privacy Framework and standard contractual clauses for this. More information: firebase.google.com/support/privacy.

Protection against abuse (reCAPTCHA)

To make sure only the real app and no automated programs access the database, we use Firebase App Check with Google reCAPTCHA (Google Cloud Fraud Defense). As soon as the app connects to the database, reCAPTCHA invisibly checks in the background whether the request comes from a real device. For this, your browser sends technical data to Google, such as your IP address, browser and device details, and information about how the page is used. We only receive the result of the check. This is based on our interest in protecting the app, the statistics and other players from abuse. Google's Privacy Policy and Terms of Service apply.

Suggesting questions

When you suggest a question, we store the text, the category, the name you optionally provide and your anonymous ID. Only we can see suggestions. They are deleted after review. If we add a question to the game, your name (if provided) appears as "Question by …".

Reporting content

When you report a name or a question, we store the reason, your optional note, your anonymous ID and what was visible at that moment (e.g. room code, other players' names, question). Only we can see reports. They are deleted after review. The app already filters offensive words in names and questions as they are typed.

Redeeming codes

When you redeem a code in the settings, we only increase the counter of how often that code has been redeemed. We don't store who redeemed it. Only your device remembers that you've already used the code.

Ask Friends

When you send friends questions, we store your name and the 3 to 10 questions (including self-written ones). Both are visible to everyone with the link. Anyone who answers leaves their name and their answers. The answers can only be seen by you as the creator and by the person who gave them. If you choose "Guess answers", we also store your own answers; guessers only see them after guessing, together with the names and scores of the other guessers.

Friends

You add friends via your friend link, a QR code or a request in the game. Anyone who isn't your friend can't search for you or see anything about you. As soon as you use friends, we store a small profile in the database with your name, your level, your title (with the chosen form, e.g. "god" or "goddess"), your cat (coat and accessory), your unlocked achievements, the number of duels you've won and your XP for this week and last week (for the weekly ranking among friends). Only your friends can see this profile. We also store your friends list (names and anonymous IDs), open requests (name of the person asking) and invitations to a room, a 1 vs. 1 or your questions (name, type and room code or link). There is no chat.

If you throw a throwable (water balloon, snowball, pie or paint bomb) at a friend, we store your name, your anonymous ID, the item and the time until your friend next opens the app. If you throw via a link, it only contains your friend code and the item; whoever opens it becomes your friend, just like with the friend link. What's currently on your cat (item and time of the hit) is stored in your profile so your friends can see it.

If you remove a friend, you also disappear from their list. "Delete backup" in the settings also deletes your profile, friendships, requests, invitations and hits. You can also request deletion by email.
